Equipped for icy winters
Article Abstract:
Frankfurt Airport (FAG) has linked up with Lufthansa to initiate a joint action plan regarding aircraft de-icing at the German airport. The Aircraft De-icing Plan meant for the 1997-1998 winter season resulted from discussions by a working group that was established under the leadership of Werner Peters of FAG Ground Operations, and which also encompassed representation from Lufthansa; Lufthansa Maintenance; American and Delta Airlines; FAG airport management and ground operations; and the Frankfurt Airline Operators Committee. The plan, formally registered with Eurocontrol, defines three levels of opreational alert, ranging from phase 1 where waiting time for de-icing does not surpass 15 minutes, to a full-phase 3 situation where restrictions on departure are anticipated.

Beware tunnel vision
Article Abstract:
Construction of the new tunnel connecting Terminals 1 and 4 at London Heathrow Airport has been hampered by delays. Originally scheduled to come on line in early 1998, main contractor BAE Automated Systems began only testing live bags on the tunnel section in April 1998. Airport operator BAA and customer British Airways are said to have demanded extensive trials of the tunnel, resulting in the delays. BAA and BA are concerned about an unanticipated wear on the curved section of the track and problems with merging. The tunnel is designed to reduce minimum connect times and the level of short shipments or missed connections.
