Asia conjures wind and water to boost business
Article Abstract:
Business operators in Hong Kong often consult with 'fung shui' experts for help with a range of problems, including reduced productivity, physical ailments, and falling profits. Fung shui (wind and water) remedies often include suggestions for structural changes in office layout. Fung shui entails learning to balance the contrasting forces of yin and yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine, and negative and positive. Some westerners working in Hong Kong also take fung shui seriously, finding that belief in its effects can result in real changes.

China's second cultural revolution: service
Article Abstract:
Hotelier Joachim Burger manages Guangzhou's China Hotel, part of the Hong-Kong based New World Hotels International group. Burger arrived in China in Oct 1981, and his operation is now a smooth-functioning, profitable joint venture with the Chinese that employs 3,000 people. Some of Burger's success is attributed to his long tenure in China and to his emphasis on intensive staff orientation programs. The need for quality services has become increasingly important in China since normalization of relations with the US took place in the middle 1970's.
