Essex men look to China
Article Abstract:
Chinese civil servants have been visiting Essex, England, to learn about town planning and development. China wants to create or develop aboput 10,000 towns and villages but has only 20,000 architects in its 1.1 billion population. The Chinese were interested in new town developments in England and in the possibility of collaboration. Essex and Jiangsu, China, are twinned and have agreed that Essex will provide information, advice and assistance in rural town planning.

Interpreter of the city
Article Abstract:
American writer Richard Sennett has for many years been questioning the function of cities, focusing on the ways in which people live, move and interact within cities. His work is increasingly relevant as many organisations now begin to look at the future of the UK's cities. Key themes include the relationship between an individual's sense of identity and the social, political and built elements of city life.
