Europe gets a defence giant
Article Abstract:
DaimlerChrysler's aerospace division will merge with Lagardere Matra to create European Aeronautic Defence and Space company (EADS). This will be the largest aerospace group in Europe, ranking third world wide. A holding company will have a 60% stake in EADS with 40% to be floated. British Aerospace (BAe) stocks fell following the announcement since BAe had sought an alliance with DaimlerChrysler. Airbus will have an 80% stake held by EADS, and will be able to become a proper company.

The defense industry is at present very home-based, but must move in the direction of multinationalism. The end of the cold war and military cooperation in NATO has hurt the defense industry economically, and is forcing defense companies to pool their resources.

A new Atlantic alliance?

The defense industries in the US and Europe will likely form some sort of alliance to become stronger, acquire better technology, and ensure international security. NATO is the only organization that can manage this future alliance.
