Article Abstract:
Thailand's volatile coalition government under Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa may not last through 1996. Banharn faces opposition over the politicization of the Finance Ministry and Central Bank leading to several scandals that compromised monetary and fiscal policies for improving the economy. The stability of Thai banks has suffered in the eyes of foreign investors. Some are concerned that the military may intervene, or at least gain power through a Parliament member and former general, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh of the New Aspiration Party.

The enemy within
Article Abstract:
Thai Defense Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh is conspicuously absent from a list of ministers identified by the opposition Democrat party to be included as part of a censure debate scheduled for May 8-10, 1996. The omission has fueled speculation that Yongchaiyudh may leave the coalition government to form his own in the absence of an election. The Defense Minister also serves as deputy prime minister and has consolidated his support from the country's military.

Peace in his time
Article Abstract:
Thailand's recently appointed prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh plans to reestablish Thailand's dominant position in Southeast Asian diplomacy. Chavalit is keen to achieve better economic and political relationships with Thailand neighbours. He received financial donations from Chinese authorities after establishing links with the People's Liberation Army of China. He lacks experience in the Foreign Ministry, say critics.
