European markets: Eastern European OTC healthcare
Article Abstract:
The Eastern European over-the-counter (OTC) healthcare sector posted an estimated $3.69 million in retail sales in 1998, more than doubling from $1.490.1 million in 1994. Russia accounted for the biggest market share of 64.9% during the year, due primarily to the availability of most medicines over the counter, which can be traced to the absence of any distinction and adequate regulation between prescription and non-prescription medicines. The biggest OTC sector in 1998 was analgesics with a 29.2% value share, which is attributable to analgesics having the longest tradition of self-medication in the region. Cough and cold remedies followed with a 25.3% share.

OTC in the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
A number of trends characterize Netherlands' over-the-counter (OTC) healthcare market. Analgesics hold the largest market share accounting for 16% of total sales in 1992. Growth of registered non-ethical OTCs drugs was less than the growth of non-registered products. The fragmented market is also evidenced by six brands competing in the analgesics sector. Backgrounds on major manufacturers are presented.
