Relatively few manufacturers generate a huge proportion of sales in the European prepared soups sector, which is considered concentrated. Top manufacturers in the category are The Campbell Soup Company, HJ Heinz, Unilever's Van den Bergh food division, Bestfoods and Nestle. More attention to brand-name strengthening via sustained product development is the strategy of Campbell Soup, Heinz and other multinational firms, while smaller companies evolve as top competitors at the premium side of niche categories due to their employment of more risky strategies in new product development. Meanwhile, private-label products are experiencing remarkable growth across all major sectors in majority of key European markets.

An increase in premium food segments, especially chilled and RTS specialty soups, is expected to prompt gains to the soups market in Europe. Mass-market-related, single-serve instant segment stand to benefit due to private-label products, as reasonably priced products that are more convenient give impetus to the dried category. However, Italian consumers have yet to adopt soups, as well as canned products, in their diet. Meanwhile, a decline in real value is predicted to be felt in Germany and Spain from 1997 to 2002.
