The largest prepared-soups market in Europe is the United Kingdom, where the category earned $609.5 million. The absence of a soup-eating custom in Italy prompted only a $59.1-million market for prepared soups in the region, whereas industrially prepared foods in Spain may be the rationale behind the region's small, $89.2-million market for prepared soups. Furthermore, around 90% of Spanish consumers continue to eat home-made soups, but real value growth of prepared soups in the region is modest in 1997. Meanwhile, volume of prepared soups in France decreased due to the mild winter in 1997, although nominal value growth in the region is moderate at 3.7%.

The relaunch of dried soups in the early 1990s is considered as responsible for the bulk of the market's growth, which may also be attributed to the economic hard times during 1995 and 1996. The economic downturn likewise saw the price decrease in dried soups, although Italians consumed ready meals that are more expensive when the economy recovered. Meanwhile, a 9% decrease was reported in Germany, which showed the lowest performance over the review period from 1993 to 1997.

The prepared-soups category experienced a decrease in value sales in only Germany and Spain during the review period from 1993 to 1997. However, total market growth in France and the UK was strengthened by value growth in the liquid-soups sector, with chilled soups and other novel products raising value performance and precipitating premium prices. The dried-soups sector has bolstered total value growth in Italy inspite of the sector's decreased value in the UK, Spain, Germany and France. Meanwhile, a decrease in value and volume sales of instant dried soups was reflected in the UK.
