European markets travel & tourism: comparative market sizes
Article Abstract:
Domestic tourism was Europe's biggest tourism sector, except for the UK and Spain, in 1997 due to the relative weak values of such major currencies as the Italian lira and French franc. The strong pound-sterling and favorable trends have made outgoing tourism the largest sector in the UK at $31.7 billion in 1997. In Spain, the weak peseta and a preponderance of historic destinations and beaches have made income tourism the largest sector at $28.1 billion in 1997. The incoming tourism markets of Italy, Spain, France and the UK were of the same size, more or less, mainly because of easy travel between those countries and growing competition in the air travel industry.

European markets travel & tourism: operator shares
Article Abstract:
Tourism-based companies in Europe continue to rely on travel agents to market holiday packages, but tour operators and Internet technology are challenging the hold of travel agents. Internet technology and related systems are receiving more investments from tourism companies in an effort to deliver global service in an increasingly globalized industry. The increased investment in computerized reservation systems, in turn, has further accelerated the rate of cross-border consolidation. More independent and adventurous tourists are also changing the industry's landscape.

European markets travel & tourism: key trends
Article Abstract:
Increasing consumer confidence in many of the recovering economies of Europe is behind an uptick in the region's travel and tourism industry. Notable growth in long-haul travel, fueled by increasing competition and formation of alliances, is also benefiting tourism. Countries with weak currencies are becoming popular destinations for travelers from countries with strong currencies. More tourists, however, are becoming more independent-minded as they rely less on tour operators to provide them with package holidays.
