European unemployment and flexible employment practices
Article Abstract:
There have been measures in Europe to cut labor costs for employers by removing regulations and reducing taxation. Training schemes have also been used to tackle unemployment by making the unemployed more employable. Job creation has also been fostered through scemes to promote entrepreneurship. The aim is for efficiency in employment markets, while at the same time ensuring social justice. Member states have flexiblity in developing national solutions within a European framework.

Social reform: some implications for HRM strategy
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government plans minimum wage legislation, and European Union (EU) laws are likely to affect UK employment practices. UK social reform could also affect social security, training and education. Government policy and legislation could affect companies' human resource management strategies. Productivity could be increased, and companies may replace capital with labor, or relocate production to countries where there is less emphasis on employment rights.

Research and development and market share
Article Abstract:
The amount spent on research and development for many companies is a crucial determinant of their market share. Japanese methods of reducing production costs are often implemented after research and development projects have identified them. UK economic performance may have been limited by not transforming inventions into products and by spending too much on research into defence products.
