Europe's satellite plans
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has endorsed a new-generation satellite navigation service, called Galileo. The system is envisioned to consist of at least 21 satellites in medium Earth orbit, and another three satellites in geostationary Earth orbit or inclined geosynchronous orbit. Galileo is estimated to cost between 2.2 billion and 2.95 billion euros ($1.5 billion to $2 billion). EC officials hope to tap the lucrative market for satellita navigation services, which are currently monopolized by the US-owned Global Positioning System satellites.

Fuelling safety on the ramp
Article Abstract:
Vehicle-free aircraft refueling has done away with much of the congestion associated with refueling vehicles, but has generated some issues over safety. Most major airports now employ fixed gate-based fueling equipment connected to an underground pipeline. Safety concerns revolve around the fact that the most critical components of the hydrant refueling system - the coupling connections and the pit valve - are situated in a relatively confined area in which there is much vehicular traffic.
