Europe's superfluous city?
Article Abstract:
The imminent single European market of 1992 may make Geneva superfluous as a center of international trade and finance because Switzerland is not a member of the European Community (EC), and international companies now headquartered in Geneva may decide it is to their economic advantage to be located in an EC country. Switzerland's state monopolies in telecommunications and utilities are relatively inefficient compared to many EC countries, and the Swiss government has not embraced deregulation the way the EC has. The inefficient infrastructure also may spur a corporate exodus if there are not improvements. In addition, Geneva is experiencing problems with traffic, smog, and expensive real estate, which combined with Swiss regulations that make it difficult for foreigners to get work permits, makes the city less attractive as a headquarters for foreign companies.

Europe's spiritual origins
Article Abstract:
Jean Monnet, French statesman, was the original supporter of a united Europe. He has been dead for a decade, but he would be pleased to learn that his ideas about an internal market in Europe are now seen as positive and feasible. He would also be happy to see that they are being put into practice as 1992 approaches.
