Article Abstract:

Non-convex optimization models are used to formulate reliable tactical plans for the design of rail freight networks. The models are employed in evaluating the applicability of two planning methods, namely, the local search and the Branch and Bound methods. Results suggest that the Branch and Bound method is more reliable than the local search method in providing effective tactical plans for the design of rail freight networks.

Local search methods with statistical analysis

Article Abstract:

Statistical inference techniques based on the Weibull distribution of local minima distribution were employed to evaluate several local search heuristics as applied to the Rail Freight Transportation Design Model. Specifically, global minimum estimation was used to determine how close to the optimum were the solutions generated by the simulated annealing, tabu search and 'descent' methods.
