Explaining export development through psychic distance: enlightening or elusive?
Article Abstract:
Investigations into the role of psychic distance, that measure of a manager's perception of a foreign market as a cultural intimate, on export performance failed to provide a significant connection. This is manifest in the inconsistency of the data, which can be interpreted as a negation of the initial hypothesis or an unperceived effect of the globalization of markets. Results show that in countries that show either an identification or a divergence from the culture of the multinational's parent country, the export performance of foreign subsidiaries failed to evoke any cultural connection.
