FALL IN IRON EXPORT HITS MPT CARGO TRAFFIC
Article Abstract:
The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Goa, handled a low cargo traffic of 12 million tonnes at the end of the third quarter of 1998-99 (13.6 million tonnes during the third quarter of 1997-98). This is attributed to decline in iron ore exports from MPT. The total exports from MPT for 1998-99 is expected to be 18.9 million tonnes, which is 10 percent less than 21 million tonnes exported in 1997-98. MPT routes about 85 percent of the country's total iron ore exports. During 1997-98, iron ore exports from Goa had crossed 18.4 million tonnes, while in 1998- 99, it may not touch 16 million tonnes. Article Abstract:
Indian iron ore exporters have settled for low prices on their exports to Japan in 1999-2000 AD. The export price and quantity are negotiated annually jointly by Japanese steel mills and iron ore exporters. The export price of iron ore lumps has been reduced by 11 percent to $14.80 per tonne for 1999-2000 as compared to $16.54 per tonne for 1998 exports. Export prices of iron ore fines have been slashed to $12.73 per tonne for 1999- 2000 against $14.3 per tonne for 1998 exports. The move follows decline in demand for iron ore in Japan. (gs)(vr)
