FRANCE: CASINO ACQUIRES SUPERETTE CHAIN
Article Abstract:
French retail chain Casino acquired the local branch of Guyenne et Gascogne, a network made up of 75 permanent branches and 26 seasonal stores, totalling a tax-inclusive turnover of FFr 120mn, for 1998 data. This acquisition enables Casino to strengthen its presence in the Basque country. All of the stores will change their name to Petit Casino; FFr 12.7mn will be invested for this purpose. This sale of the local store branch is part of Guyenne et Gascogne's determination to consolidate on its hypermarkets (Carrefour) operations, an its big discount supermarkets (Stoc).

FRANCE: STOC RETAIL CHAIN TAKES CHAMPION NAME

As part of the merger between Promodes and Carrefour, the Stoc supermarkets have taken the Champion name. The Stoc name disappeared from the French market on 15 November 2000, when all of the stores changed to the Champion logo. The group consisting of Carrefour and Promodes networks is the second largest supermarket group in France, with 1,047 stores totalling 1.523mn square metres in sales space, behind Intermarche, which has 1,558 supermarkets and 2.183 square metres in sales space.

FRANCE: CASINO TAKES OVER 13 LEADER PRICE STORES

French retailer Casino has taken over 13 Leader Price stores operated by Jean-Luc Le Douarin through the LDH holding company in Brittany and in the Pays de la Loire. Casino is to operate its 13 stores in partnership with Distribution Bretagne Atlantic, which is based at Lorient in the Morbihan departement.
