FRANCE: HUMAN RESOURCES AT LECLERC
Article Abstract:
In 1996, three economists investigated the management of the workforce in two Leclerc hypermarkets. The first store used 'Taylor-type' management with a lot of part-time people, short-term contracts, overtime, unplanned schedules, and no set day off. The management of th-e second store was more competitive and its costly investment paid for itself through three factors: employees' involvement which improved productivity, employees are able to carry out different tasks, and there is very low turnover. The method used limits part-time work, opts for long contracts, and for schedules which take into account family demands, and sets up a pay system, bonuses, and an internal promotion system which is better than the sector's collective labour agreement.

FRANCE: HYPARLO SELLS TO FORMER CONTINENT STORES
Article Abstract:
Hyparlo is getting ready to sell two former Continent stores, located at Bourges and Chasse-sur-Rhone at the beginning of February 2001. At that time they will be operated by management under lease by Geant Casino. In return, Hyparlo will recuperate two Carrefour hypermarkets a Saint-Egreve in the Isere departement, and at Orange in the Vaucluse departement, also in management under lease. This sale, which occurs after the Carrefour-Promodes merger, follows the opinion of the Fair Trade Council, which put Carrefour on notice to end its franchise contracts for the Bourges and Chasse-sur-Rhone hypermarkets.
