The French camera equipment market saw 2.4mn units sold in 1999, representing a rise of 9.5% on 1998. The 62% rise in APS film sales, and a 7% increase in colour films sales also added to market progression. The PAP (ready to use cameras) sector also saw a 12% progression in 1999. Compact 135 cameras saw a 0.8% drop in sales to 1.18bn in 1999, with reflex 135 and reflex APS cameras recording a 4% rise, with 241,000 and 26,000 units respectively. Compact APS units increased by 22% to 760,000 in sales.

FRANCE: COMPANY STRATEGIES IN DIGITAL CAMERAS
Article Abstract:
While Hewlett-Packard markets a thorough multimedia offer, from digital cameras to communication technology equipment, Kodak puts the emphasis on simplicity in an attempt to convert digital cameras into a mass market in France. Sony has split its offer into two categories (top of the range cameras for the general public, basic and easy-to-use products for professionals). Olympus, the leading player with 25% of sales by volume in France (followed by Kodak and Fuji), has enhanced its software and connection equipment range in addition to its range of six digital cameras. Digital cameras are attracting a variety of players including big names in computing and office automation equipment, and consumer electronics in addition to camera manufacturers. The market is very successful in France, with 180,000 units sold in 1999 (80,000 the year before) and over 350,000 units anticipated in 2000.
