FRANCE: MCA ON PURCHASING BEHAVIOUR
Article Abstract:
The Marketing Concept Action (MCA) survey firm, has published, as it does every year, an analysis of purchasing behaviour of 12,300 clients in 41 categories of products in 2000. The survey shows that 73% of purchases are made in less than 10 seconds and that the choice is increasingly difficult because of the ever-growing number of new products. Of the customers surveyed, 43% go to the eight principal departments every time they go to the store. This rate rises to 81% for the chilled food section. In the most-visited departments 51% first buy their usual products, and less than 10% buy another product. The percentage of men who do the shopping is increasing as well as the share of products they buy for themselves. The new fact is to be taken into consideration by the retailers and manufacturers because a customer will more easily try a new product for himself. It also turns out that 48% of purchases are planned and that the customers decide on the other 52% in the department, which shows how important it is to pay attention to the way the item is presented in the department.
