FRANCE: PETIT BASQUE AND PRIVATE LABELS
Article Abstract:
Petit Basque, the French dairy product company based in Bordeaux, makes 25% of its turnover from the production of private label products for the Monoprix, Auchan, Carrefour, and Systeme U retail chains. The company does not want to exceed this figure in order to not become dependent on the retail chains. Petit Basque has invested FFr 5mn in new production facilities since it started to work together with Monoprix in 1992, and more recently it has invested FFr 500,000 in another tool for the production of rice pudding and semolina pudding. It has hired a quality engineer and a person to head its research and development.

FRANCE: CHILLED DAIRY PRODUCTS ARE POPULAR
Article Abstract:
Chilled dairy products fit the current trend to natural, healthy, balanced products. The chilled dairy product is largely dominated by major groups (Danone, Nestle, and Yoplait), and smaller companies are striving to gain acceptance by favouring niches with high added value. This is the case of Solo Italia, which intends to become the top brand on the French chilled dairy desserts market, as well as Mamie Nova which is focusing on sweet things with its 'Gourmands' line and its new packets of fruit sauce or custard.

FRANCE: SAVOURY DAIRY SNACKS ARE GROWING
Article Abstract:
Although dairy snacks are largely dominated by sweet products, the savoury segment is gradually growing with products well-suited to eating on the go, such as President's Acroba't mini-cheese containers, and Yoplait's Petits Filous Tub's. These products appeal to children and mothers, their target groups with their nutritional qualities, due to their milk origin (which reassures mothers), and the fun aspect of the packaging which attracts the children.
