FRANCE: RETAILERS AND RATIONAL AGRICULTURE
Article Abstract:
Large retailers are betting on rational agriculture. Auchan is heavily involved in this process. It estimates that its 1999 turnover from rational agriculture, equal to that from organic agriculture, will increase fivefold by the end of 2000. Pierre Frisch, the Director of Food Products Produced from Rational Agriculture, estimates that the rational agriculture phenomenon will increase, because it responds to real civic-minded demand. In the meantime, there remain questions concerning the regulation of this type of agriculture and the problem of optimising products which come from rational agriculture. The government is remaining in the position of an observer, while awaiting a report from Guy Paillotin.

FRANCE: GUYENNE ET GASCOGNE'S GOALS
Article Abstract:
Bertrand de Montesquiou, president of Guyenne et Gascogne, has denied a rumour that the Carrefour may take over his company. He says that Guyenne et Gascogne intends to remain financially independent in order to ensure its development. With a tax-inclusive consolidated turnover of FFr 7.87bn in 1999, up 3.2% from 1998, the Guyenne et Gascogne group plans to strengthen its position on the supermarket segment, by creating or buying stores. Sogara, the subsidiary owned equally by Guyenne et Gascogne and Carrefour, posted a 1999 turnover of FFr 10.46bn, up only 2.1%, less than forecast. This weak growth is due to the difficulty of access to Sogara hypermarkets. Therefore it has planned work to remedy this problem.
