FRANCE: SEMAINE DES TELECOMS SHOW NOT A SUCCESS
Article Abstract:
Though the introduction of the GPRS standard paves the way to the presentation of real mobile intranet systems for companies, manufacturers are taking time to present new GPRS handsets to be connected to PCs. Manufacturers have been promising such machines 'for the following month' for one year, the paper says, complaining that the situation is not changing though the prototypes displayed as part of the recent Semaine des telecoms show in Paris (19-21 September 2000), were operable. With the exception of the coming introduction of GPRS services, the show was a disappointment in spite of its 300 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors. Alcatel was the only major network construction name present, while a few operators was there, when there are over 70 telephone operators with a licence in France.

FRANCE: REVIEW OF ALCATEL R&D AND DEVELOPMENT LINKS
Article Abstract:
The French telecoms equipment group, Alcatel, is in favour of establishing more larger joint development and collaboration programmes. The group believes the programmes are useful for its long term research, in order to develop and collaborate on new standards, such as fibre optics or cordless technology. The current projects include European programmes, like Eureka Medea+ (components), and Itea (onboard software), and French cooperations in projects like the development of the ADSL network. Through numerous partnerships, Alcatel invests around EUR 2bn annually on research and development, mainly in its centres in France, Belgium, and Germany.
