Faded glory: Kadoorie hotel firm misses opportunities
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels was once the foremost hotel in the colony. In the 1990s, it is but one of the many mildly successful hotel chains. Managed first by Horace Kadoorie, brother of business magnate Lawrence, and later by Lawrence's son Michael, the luxury hotel chain failed to capitalize on its past preeminence. Horaces's chronic illness and Michael's predilection forf detail over broad sweeping direcions contributed to the hotel's relegation to a minor part in the country's leap into economic prosperity.

Article Abstract:
The incursion into the US and European market by Asian-based hoteliers has yielded unprofitable results, such as higher costs and lower occupancy rates. Most importantly, the ability of top Asian hotels to expand in Asia, which is the hottest hotel market, has been compromised by the industry's global venture. For instance, only Hong Kong-based Shangri-La International succeeded in its expansion efforts in Asia while Mandarin Oriental and Hongkong and Shanghai Hotel's 1991 earnings dropped 17% and 6%, respectively.
