Failure of Asean, APEC to show Asian leadership during region's crisis reveals missed opportunity
Article Abstract:
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), two of the most momentous economic organizations in the region, have been criticized for waging meager efforts in addressing the recent currency crisis. Their failure signifies the fact that several Asian countries are incapable of directing their own economies without the help of Western organizations, particularly World Bank and International Monetary Fund. These organizations have not even alerted finance ministers about emergency measures and virtually failed to extend their leadership to countries which best need their assistance.

. . . but shows barrier reef to refugees
Article Abstract:
Australia, with a population of 20 million, for many years enforced strict white-only immigration laws, but has in past decades relaxed these, so that over 5 million of its people are now immigrants. But there is still fear of being inundated by Asian refugees, as has been shown by the recent refusal of the Australian government to allow a freighter that had rescued Afghan refugees from a sinking boat to enter Australian waters.
