Faking it
Article Abstract:
The dominating influences on the architecture of EuroDisney, Paris, France, are southern California and the film-set. Main Street is a pastiche of American Victorianism, while the most enjoyable architecture is in the futuristic Discoveryland with architecture in the Art Deco vein. The hotels were designed by well-known architects but Michael Graves' New York Hotel is low-grade architecture, while the Cheyenne, by Robert Stern, has an attractive facade covering banal rooms. All services and service points have been cleverly disguised or hidden.

Favourite building
Article Abstract:
Fred Keck's Crystal House, constructed for an exhibition in Chicago in 1934, had a beautiful and simple plan. The house had a box shape, two bays by three. The bays were defined by the steel frame and the walls were made of glass. The services were all located in a central core. Keck incorporated revolutionary ideas, but there would have been problems, including lack of shade from the sun. The house was constructed in seven weeks, then dismantled after the exhibition and sold for scrap.

Engineering design
Article Abstract:
Part of a series of exhibitions celebrating the role of engineering in architecture, this exhibition describes and displays features of well known comemporary buildings. It stresses the elegance of structural solutions and the straightforward approach of good engineers to design. There are few detailed plans or sections, making the exhibition incomplete but two video presentations of engineers talking about their work are an informative highlight of the exhibition.
