Cleaning up their act
Article Abstract:
Thailand has begun instituting tough environmental legislation to combat the rapidly growing pollution problem in the country. There is, however, the difficulty of testing the practicality of the laws as well as putting teeth into enforcement. The latter has always been an undermanned activity because of low wages and its staff usually succumb to bribery. Furthermore, some observers fear that the stringent laws might scare foreign investors. Others do not see any effect on investment since multinational companies have learned to live with similar laws in other countries.

Playing safe
Article Abstract:
The concentration of Thailand's rallying markets on property and financial stocks contributed to the upset of the stockmarket after the 1992 military crackdown. However, the market is expected to rebound as a result of Anand Panyarachun's appointment as interim prime minister. Expected to rally are investments in Siam Cement, telecommunication companies and exports. Long-term prospects are also good for consumer-products manufacturers, although the banking, property and tourist industries remain unstable.

Top Thai media companies are competing for the right to operate two private television stations. The government also plans to grant licenses to three public television stations. In the past, only the government could operate television stations in Thailand. Private media firms are hopeful that the operation of television stations would be profitable for them.
