Fallow season: Chamlong refuses party leadership, returns to farm
Article Abstract:
Thailand's courageous political figure Chamlong Srimuang has refused to assume party leadership of Palang Dharma, the political party that he formed. Instead, Chamlong has taken to simplistic life in his farm in Kanchanburi province west of Bangkok, growing rice and fruits without the benefit of modern technological farming practices. Many political analysts believe that his political supporters are dismayed at his attitude because manyThais recognize his charismatic ability to become a contender in the next general election.

Keeper of the flame: King's prestige gives him a powerful role
Article Abstract:
Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej has enormous prestige in his country, and seems increasingly willing to use it publicly to maintain national stability. Some advocates of political reform hope he will take a direct hand in support of them, perhaps by appointing someone to implement changes that elected politicians seem incapable of making. Now 67, he is the world's longest-serving monarch at 50 years. He usually works tirelessly on behalf of the nation's poor farmers, working on local, small-scale projects.
