Turn of the screw
Article Abstract:
Economic reform in China has not resulted in greater political freedom as expected. Security officials continue with surveillance activities on citizens and resident foreigners. Tiananmen Square, historically a favorite site for demonstrators wanting to air their grievances, is provided with security detail especially on certain events and anniversaries that could be used for public disturbances. Externally, the Communist government projects an image of a freer country, but continues to clamp down on potential sources of political dissent.

The next generation: Chinese leadership takes a conservative turn
Article Abstract:
The uncertainty of pre-succession politics in China fosters the conservative turn seen recently, heightening economic caution, hardline foreign policy, and jingoistic nationalism. The deaths of others have made the military the sole repository of senior figures who participated in the revolution, and they are more conservative than civilians. The troika of successors to Deng Xiaoping (Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, and Zhu Rongjii) is joined by Qiao Shi, the party's intelligence chief, though some consider him relatively liberal.

Mortal state
Article Abstract:
The death of Li Xiannian is expected to intensify the in-fighting within China's present leadership structure. Li belonged to the so-called Eight Immortals, the uneasy coalition of octogenarians that grabbed political power after the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. Observers foresee increased factional in-fighting as the communist party's 14th congress scheduled for the later part of 1992 nears.
