Family secrets; legendary magician's son studies hard to follow in his footlights
Article Abstract:
Prodip Chandra Sorcar Jr is following the tradition of his father, Pratul Chandra Sorcar, who revived and made respectable the entertainment of magic in India. Prodip was not encouraged to follow his father's profession and received advanced degrees in chemistry and applied psychology from Calcutta University. He first appeared as a commercial magician several days after his father's death in 1971 when he fulfilled a contractual obligation to perform in Japan. Sorcar aims to 'modernize' magic by making blend in with other art forms including dance and film.

Turbulent tribes: northeastern states seethe with insurgency
Article Abstract:
In India the Bodoland Liberation Tigers Force claimed responsibility for attacks on a passenger train, a road bridge and a rail link in the state of Assam, cutting off the northeast from the remainder of India. The region is strategically important due to its natural resources including oil and natural gas, and also its borders with China, Bangladesh, Burma and Bhutan. Little private investment is attracted due to the many insurgencies, and Assam is not the only state suffering, with insurgents active in Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura.

India reacts to cable TV: channels increased to fight influx of 'alien culture.'
Article Abstract:
India is responding to the many multinational cable-TV networks that sprang up after private parties were given access to the electronic media. Doordarshan, the government-owned television network, is trying to broaden its appeal by introducing new channels offering a variety of programming to match the cable networks' efforts. However, providing material for all this programming may prove costly for Doordarshan. Satisfying the various elements of India's multilingual society will be another challenge.
