Farming the garden of Eden
Article Abstract:
Environmental aspects of farming were important in Central America, where traditionally farmed land was less affected by Hurricane Mitch. There are concerns about environmental damage that can be linked to farming, such as soil degradation, pollution, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. Agro-ecology is an approcah that seeks to promote traditional farming methods. This approach is not welcomed by some agribusiness companies, though Unilever is running pilor projects. Such practices tend to mean that food is more expensive, and consumers may not want to pay higher prices.

Article Abstract:
Farming faces a challenge of feeding an additional 1.5 billion people by 2020, with demand for meat rising in developing economies, and a need to use less water. There are concerns that rises in productivity may involve food safety problems and environmental issues. Higher commodity prices could help farmers. Many economies are seeing rises in agricultural production, but sub-Saharan Africa has seen a drop in productivity. There is a need for less clumsy regulation and more solutions geared to local needs.
