Telepizza SA became the leader of the fast food market in 1997, surpassing McDonald's, with a value share of 26.1% spurred by the acquisition of Pizza World. The company was founded in 1987 and operated around 326 locations across Spain as of the end of 1997, 20% of which are directly owned. Telepizza products include the Tres Pisos, the Pizza de Ahumados, empanadas and a private label ice cream. The company has a presence in around 50 locations scattered in Belgium, Greece, Colombia, Portugal, Mexico, Poland, Chile and Belgium. Telepizza stands out from major west European market operators with its position as a domestic firm leading the pizza sector.

Tricon Restaurants International, which operates the Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) chain of restaurants, reports that its Pizza Hut chain secured a market share of 8.1% in value terms of the overall Spanish fast food market in 1997. Pizza Hut, which is ranked the fourth most dominant player in the fast food market, however, reported a decline in share by 1.9% to 21.7% between 1995 and 1997. Pizza Hut's revenues increased by 0.9% in 1997 compared to sales in 1996, while KFC reported 9.1% rise in sales to Ptas3,600 million in 1997. KFC, which ranks eighth fast food chain in Spain, secured a market share of 1.8% in value terms in 1997.
