Faulty pipework main cause of sinkings - worldwide insurer

According to a report by Sunderland Marine Mutual Insurance Co. Ltd., the main reason in claims for loss in fishing industry across the world was flooding and sinking. These instances were due to pipework or seacock failure. The insurance company also recommended regular maintenance and inspection of pipework on fishing vessels to prevent such mishaps.

The Coast Guard expert Lt. George Borlase who investigated the reasons for the 2001 sinking of the fishing vessel Arctic Rose in Bering Sea has concluded the open door allowing seawater to flood the interior of space of the vessel could be the likely trigger of the mishap.
