Fear of August: government bids to boost national morale
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's officials in Oct 1995 took several steps to both distract and reassure citizens nervous about the military threat posed by China. The immediate cause of anxiety was the occurence of the leap month that takes place in the Chinese lunar calendar once every 19 years, and heightened by a book titled 'The Leap Month of August 1995: China's Violent Invasion of Taiwan.' On Oct 5 President Lee Teng-hui reviewed a huge display of military equipment, and the cabinet plans to increase military spending 20% next year.

Strait talking: Taiwan stands increasingly divided over its future with China
Article Abstract:
There is dissent over Taiwan's future, both at home and by governments on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. There are two diverging streams of dissent, such as the divisive debate over President Lee Teng-hui's policies towards Beijing, and the rise in respectability of the country's independence movement. Beijing is closely monitoring the debate, and some Taiwan officials believe China is deliberately causing rifts between the government and the business community.
