Fiat goes shopping
Article Abstract:
Fiat is talking with BMW about a possible alliance, and a merger may even result from the talks. Fiat is one of the European car producers seen as vulnerable after the acquisition of Chrysler by Daimler-Benz. European producers face over-capacity, and the drop in value of the Japanese yen means that Japanese producers can compete more effectively in Europe. BMW officials argue that speculation of a merger with Fiat is unsubstantiated, and point to overlaps between the ranges of the two producers.
