Mr Boring goes shopping
Article Abstract:
Vodaphone chief executive, Chris Gent, has increased the size of the company by over 100% through the acquisition of AirTouch, and has also bid for Mannesmann. He is seen as dispassionate and a pragmatist. He took on his new role in 1997, and has since assembled an able management team, and developed the company in the UK and abroad. The foreign operation have mainly been built up by buying minority stakes, until the Airtouch acquisition. The Mannesman bid was triggered by Mannesmann's acquisition of Orange.

Article Abstract:
Telecom Italia forecasts a drop in profit for 1999, and stockholders have protested that they should have been informed first of this news. The company's stock price has fallen to less than the price they were offered to private investors. An industrial partner could acquire a stake in Telecom Italia and British Telecommunications (BT) is one possibility. BT has declined to comment on rumors, but would gain benefits from Telecom Italia's international links.
