Finance for the future: the private sector is becoming an integral part of expansion plans
Article Abstract:
New transport equipment and infrastructur expenses are expected to reach more than US$300 billion annually. Deutsche Berkehrs-Bank, the German transport bank reported that the estimate is based on private investment projects and does not include all public expenditure. 'Jane's' estimates total expenditure on airport development worldwide is double the US$11 billion a year projected by the bank, with a further US$10 billion to be spent on air traffic control infrastructure every year. The bank says the boom in airport privatization initiatives is driven partly by a shortage of public funding.

Some improvements in apron incident rates
Article Abstract:
The Airports Council International' 1999 survey on apron incidents and accidents at 313 airports worldwide indicated that 233 or 35% of all incidents surveyed involved contact with aircraft. Of the 233 incidents involving aircraft contact, 176 were caused by apron equipment. An analysis of these 176 incidents involving apron equipment-related aircraft damage indicates that loading equipment caused 46% or 81 of the accidents, while container/pallet loaders and baggage/cargo carts/dollies caused 43 or slightly over 23% of the accidents.

Seizing revenue chances
Article Abstract:
Airport managers are called upon to increase and diversify their revenue sources to prevent over-reliance on one income source. Over-reliance on an income source could make an airport to become recession prone and be subjected to competition within the air travel industry. Airports have two general income streams, from within, and beyond. Non-traditional examples of other revenues sources include golf courses, motion picture studios and theme parks.
