Finance: trick or treat?
Article Abstract:
Currency speculators have been portrayed as immoral, and the financial system is often seen as having little impact on the real economy. Bank failures and stock price crashes can hit the economy, but financial systems are also important for economic growth since they channel funds from savers to borrowers. Intermediaries such as banks may be used, or funds may be directly invested in stocks and other investment vehicles. Payments are also made through the financial system, and liquidity is provided through savings being pooled.

There have also been developments in theory which relate to the control of financial risks. New markets have developed which help to control risk, such as futures markets. There are a number of factors such as recession, national regulatory control, asymmetric information, and systemic risk which could create problems for the financial services industry.
