Firms jockey for Japan's pension market
Article Abstract:
A series of planned reforms in the Japanese pension market is attracting the interest of a number of local and foreign companies. The overhaul of the country's pension system will include the adoption of a defined-contribution system, new tax measures and the raising of Japan's retirement age. Companies that have signified their interest in the nation's pension system include Fidelity Investment and State Street Corp, both of Boston, MA, and local groups such as Nomura Securities Ltd, Sumitomo Bank Ltd and Industrial Bank of Japan Ltd.

The Switzerland-based Roche Holding AG is paying 155 billion yen to 198 billion yen for a 50.1% stake in Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., one of Japan's leading pharmaceutical companies.
