US Army seeks lightweight gun barrels
Article Abstract:
Magnum Technology and Christensen Arms are each working under Small Business Inovation Research contracts for the US Army's Armaments Research, Development and Engineering Center to develop lightweight gun barrels for potential use in rifles and helicopter weapons. The aim is to provide barrels that perform as well as the current standard designs constructed from chromium-molybdenum-vanadium steel, in terms of firing rate and wear/eroision resistance, yet are substantially lighter.
