Five million London trees in danger from insurance fear

Insurers are facing higher subsidence claims in London and they are insisting on rigidly following guidelines produced by Kew Gardens to minimize their exposure. Buildings in London are especially susceptible to subsidence and insurers are using the maximum root spread data, but trees are not as serious a problem in subsidence as insurers believe, according to a spokesman for London's tree officers, who believes more research is needed.

Sustaining the Finnish forest: Finland's alternative system of certification allows myriad owners of small forests to conserve en masse
Article Abstract:
The Finnish Forest Industries Federation has developed an alternative certification system for networks of small producers showing that their timber is produced in a sustainable way. The scheme is to be submitted for approval to the Pan European Forest Certification system. Under the scheme, Finland's numerous smallholdings are formed into 260 forest management associations.

Refurbishment: acoustic changes to a listed interior
Article Abstract:
The BBC Radio Theatre has a listed interior and the internal appearance had to be maintained while changing the acoustics. Architects brought the walls in and lowered the ceiling and installed acoustically selected materials. A control room has also been introduced and lighting was improved using copies of original 1930s wall lights.
