Yugoslavia's self-managed crisis
Article Abstract:
A doubling in the number of strikes during the past year and a 400 percent inflation rate are indicative of the type and extent of economic difficulties faced by Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia had been seen as a useful testing ground for hybrid forms of individual enterprise and pragmatic socialism. State interference and politics are identified now as key factors in the nation's economic difficulties, rather than worker self-management. Yugoslavia's constitutionally weak federal government is trying to manage the quickly deteriorating economic situation and to service its foreign debt, but one result is that the needs of individual business enterprises are being swept aside.

Scandalous need for an honest policy in risk communications
Article Abstract:
A number of recent disasters such as the oil spill in Alaska, and the accident in Bhopal, India involving Union Carbide give support to the need for clear corporate communications in times of crisis. Many corporations do not alert employees about risk plans or procedures. It is important that companies begin to talk clearly with employees about risk communication plans. Several things which are critical include maintaining the internal circulation of data and establishing open channels to learning about the public.
