Flawed vision: Felda provides welfare but little democracy
Article Abstract:
The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) in Malaysia has the trappings of a small self-sufficient nation. Felda provides land, seedlings and basic services to the 112,000 farm families who work in itsplantations. The families repay the farmers' cooperative for the benefits they receive through the payments they get for the produce they sell to it. The biggest complaint of the farmers is not the meager sums they receive as paymentfor their crops but the land ownership scheme that is in effect. The scheme does not grant the farmers full ownership of the lands they till even after paying for them during the required number of years.

Eyes on Idris
Article Abstract:
Rumors emanating from the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange have affected the stock price of Idris Hydraulic, a financial group controlled by eminent members of Malaysia's governing party, the United Malays National Organisation (Umno). Idris' stock went up by 38 cents between Mar 4 and Apr 12, 1993, largely due to rumors that the group will soon merge with Aokam Perdana, a timber company likewise owned by Umno members. However, investors should wait to see if Idris' higher stock price lasts or is transitory.
