Folie de grandeur
Article Abstract:
Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) has made bids for Societe Generale and Paribas in a move that has been mistakenly seen as involving restructuring of the banking system in France. BNP does not plan to close branches or shed jobs. There is speculation that BNP is seeking to make the acquisitions so that it will be too large to be acquired itself. There is a need for consolidation in Europe following monetary union, but there are obstacles to this, such as labor laws which hamper shedding jobs.
