Follow the Rainbow: There's a pot of gold calling from somewhere, and convergence may find it
Article Abstract:
Industry visionaries predict a world where broadcasting, Internet services, and phone services are delivered down one line, possibly by one integrated company. In the US and Europe there have been many cross-industry deals, but countries in Asia have to wait for the slow pace of regulatory change. However HongKong Telecom was the first operator in the world to switch its local phone network to digital technology in 1993, and has recently launched a commercial interactive television service. In China the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has experimented in television and the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television has experimented with cable telephony

To boldly go: an explosion dashed this scientist's blast-off hopes - but not her spirit
Article Abstract:
Would-be astronaut Pratiwi Sudarmono's ambitions were dashed by the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. The Indonesian govt selected both her and her proposed experiment, but NASA cancelled the program that helped foreigners fly. She remains officially in the program but flight now seems unlikely, so she focuses on her career as a microbiologist, lecturing, researching, editing three scientific journals, and pursuing full-time teaching. She also maintains a fulfilling home life with her son and husband.

Combating gold theft: scientist invents way to 'fingerprint' metal
Article Abstract:
Western Australia, where most of the country's gold is mined, is resorting to high technology to thwart gold thieves, who steal 2% of Australia's current annual production of 240 tons. John Watling, an English scientists who leads the Mineral Science Laboratory at the Dept of Mines in Perth, has developed a highly sensitive mass spectrometer that can identify which mine a gold sample came from. However, widespread leniency toward gold thieves often allows them to escape conviction.
