The coming of the wired city: the recent development of cable in Britain
Article Abstract:
Broadband cable television systems are seen as important players in the development of so-called 'wired' cities where electronic information and communication replace the movement of goods and people. These broadband systems are able to carry interactive services as well as TV signals. Public authorities and planners increasingly see important implications for local social and economical development of regions and cities. Regional disparities in cable development and the possible implications of this are discussed.

Sustainability: The technocentric challenge
Article Abstract:
Planners have embraced the concept of sustainability and are attempting to implement it via the formal planning process and through Local Agenda 21. The opposing perspective of technocentrism, which is largely ignored in current planning literature, is examined. This takes the view that human well-being rather than the environment per se should be the focus of concern. It offers a radical reappraisal of how policy should evolve and challenges existing orthodoxies.
