Football diplomacy: Korea and Japan

The decision to award the 2002 soccer World Cup jointly to Japan and South Korea prompted a summit meeting between Prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and Pres Kim Young Sam, which gave their relations a boost. The leaders agreed to commission a badly needed authoritative history of both countries.
