Negotiations for a new government in South Africa have been deteriorating into violent chaos or even civil war. There were over 500 political homicides in July 1993, many of them policemen, with blame falling on both the African National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Carol Moseley Braun will the first black woman in the US Senate if she defeats Republican incumbent Richard Williamson in the Illinois election. Williamson's campaign has been subtly racist and is based on Braun's failure to report income from a timber sale.
