Ernesto Bertarelli, who owns two-thirds of Serono S.A., set up his office to manage his family's $5 billion fortune after he determined that investment bankers were not providing the services he desired. Mr. Bertarelli is like some other wealthy Europeans in setting up offices rather than relying upon investment banks.
