Ford starts from scratch in Thailand to grap a piece of the pickup market

Ford Motor Co. plans to establish itself in Thailand's highly competitive pickup truck market. The company has entered into a joint venture with Mazda Motor Co. to establish a $470 million manufacturing facility in the country which will produce 135,000 pickups annually beginning 1998. One major obstacle Ford needs to overcome is the lack of consumer awareness of its products. The company intends to launch a massive public awareness and marketing campaign to develop a strong customer base in Thailand.

Indonesia takes WTO for test drive

Indonesia is about to get a taste of international trade regulation with the WTO decision to intervene in the country's economic policies regarding the manufacture and sale of its national car project. The WTO is set to hear the case of automakers against Indonesia in an apparent protectionist case that goes against WTO regulations. The case involves the Timor automobile and the tax incentives that the government gave to the manufacturer the automobiles.

Slowing growth also damages 'Sunrise' industries

Japanese businesses in Thailand are beginning to register poor performances due to the country's slower economic activity brought about by the devaluation of the baht. The 'sunrise' sectors of business, such as electronics and automobiles, are now feeling the effects of the slowing economy, and these effects are no longer limited to the 'sunset' sectors as textiles and footwear.
