External relations
Article Abstract:
Recent developments in the European Union's (EU) external relations include the Mar. 1996 Bangkok summit which gave a new stimulus to the EU's relations with Asia. However, the EU has not yet created a formal structure or permanent organisation for its relations with Asia. The first fruits of the summit will include efforts to boost investment and trade cooperation. The EU's plans for free trade agreements with several trading partners may be affected by growing concern over just what powers the World Trade Organisation has over such agreements.

The UK and Europe: an alternative white paper
Article Abstract:
Successive UK governments have regarded the European Union (EU) in a largely negative fashion as a threat to the independence and identity of the UK, but this attitude could leave the UK out in the cold, with little influence or allies. The UK would benefit more by recognising the importance of the EU to UK security, influence and prosperity, and by adopting a positive approach to the EU and taking the initiative in policymaking.
